The species name pterygalces is from the Greek πτερύγιο (fin) and the Latin alces (moose) and refers to the palmate pectoral fins of the species similar to moose palmate antlers. The English common name "moose eelpout" and the French common name "lycode élan" are proposed (Ref. 87479).
