  Etymology of specific epithet  
The genus name Barbapellis is from the Latin barba (beard) and pellis (skin) and refers to the skin flaps situated all around the mouth. The species name pterygalces is from the Greek πτερύγιο (fin) and the Latin alces (moose) and refers to the palmate pectoral fins of the species similar to moose palmate antlers. The English common name "moose eelpout" and the French common name "lycode élan" are proposed (Ref. 87479).
